What barriers do you and your students face with blackboard? Can you provide any tips or suggestions for improvements.

Hi Max,
You posted a comment on the original blog site regarding student emails. Your concern was that students prefer using their personal email accounts rather than their DMU accounts. You tried changing their email address in Blackboard but these reverted back to their DMU email address the following day. You are not allowed to change personal details in Blackboard even though the system suggests that you can. Any changes that have taken place will revert back to the original setting the following morning if they have not been carried out by the relevant admin team. The reason why we do not send emails to non-DMU accounts is because we have had problems where the student no longer uses that account and therefore have not received vital information. We know that a student will always have a DMU account during their time at University. Apart from tutors contacting them, library staff and support departments (i.e. Finance Office, Academic Registry)will also use the DMU email as a means of communication.

In time this may be a possibility but I am unaware whether this is in the pipeline. Many staff have reported that their students do not use the DMU account and this seems to be true across the University, not just in AAD. For now however, it is our responsibilty to encourage our students to access their DMU accounts. It is not a time-consuming task, and they can access their emails via a link in Blackboard. Unfortunately, it is impossible to cater for every need of every student.

Part of the problem is that students change their email accounts quite often - at least, my lot do.

They also seem to use things like MSN in preference to email...

There is an on-going debate between my students and Richard Hall to identify trends and ways forward with e-learning

Message for Scribbler really. Does he know that the email fowarding system for students has now been disabled.

It would appear to be part of an effort to make students use the DMU email system.
